| One
of the neat things about this job is getting to talk about other
fisho’s experiences. This winter we have had clients telling
us about their amazing experiences fishing in exotic South Pacific
locations. We’ve loved seeing pictures of their catches.
We’ve sent families to Vava’u and Vanuatu where the
fishermen in the family have gone out for a day or so and caught
some great fish.
6 clients caught 6 marlin during their stay at Ika Lahi in Tonga,
while another client caught 3 marlin by himself. “Hakula”
recently landed 3 of the nicest dogtooth tuna we’ve seen and
3 of our clients in Vanuatu caught one of the biggest mahimahi ever
boated, plus an assortment of marlin and wahoo and other species.
Keep your holiday stories coming in to us and email us your pictures
– it helps us get through the winter!

The Solomons are back to normal again
after a few years of ethnic tension, and the fishing is as good
as ever.
Solomon Airlines have direct flights from Auckland departing
Saturdays, returning Sunday, or you can travel via Brisbane 2 days
a week as well – which works better for South Island departures.
Solomon Airlines are also currently refurbishing 3 domestic aircraft
in readiness for the expected high number of tourists returning
to the Solomons next year.
Zipolo Habu is fishing better than ever as there haven’t
been too many fishermen around there lately so the fish stocks are
good.
We have a great new fishing video on Zipolo. Some of our clients
are film crew and they took some amazing footage last year. They
have just completed a good promotional video on Zipolo which will
give you a good feel for this pristine location. Just ask if you
would like to view this video.

Fiji: a new fishing location.
As a diver I have visited the remote island of Kadavu
several times and have been sending divers there for 18 years. Kadavu
is located in the southern waters of Fiji, is about the size of
Great Barrier Island and is surrounded by Fiji’s largest reef
– “The Great Astrolabe Reef”
with it’s many deep water passages and off shore sea mounts.
I
have seen lots of big pelagic fish in this area and one of the dive
operators have recognized the potential of the area for sport and
game fishing. Keeping a low profile as a fishing location over the
past 2 years, Matava Resort has now gained the
experience and local fishing knowledge to complement their great
resort. They are about to take delivery of a brand new blackwatch
game boat to complement their dedicated sport fishing boat.
Fiji’s main game fishing fleet based at Pacific Harbour
regularly travels the 30-40km distance to fish in the waters around
Kadavu, as this is where the big wahoo, GT’s and billfish
are. Now you can base yourself at comfortable Matava Resort in thatched
bure style bungalows from budget 4 share to a roomy spectacular
seaview bure.
If you enjoy nature, seaviews, remote locations, good food, cold
beers and the best fishing Fiji has to offer, then Matava
Resort and Kadavu is for you.
Prices are very competitive. Contact us for details on

Port Vila, Vanuatu, has
it all.
Port Vila and it’s off shore seamounts have produced lots
of big fish action this winter, and its reputation is now rivaling
Vava’u as NZ’s #1 South Pacific fishing
location. The game fishing and sport fishing fleet based in Port
Vila has grown to meet the demand of international anglers.
Dive Fish Snow Travel now have 6 charter boats
on its books to offer you, from small center console walk around
sportfishing to small affordable game boats to large game boats
for the seamounts 40km offshore.
The liveaboard option is the ultimate way to fish if you can handle
the all day action. And price wise, why spend money on a hotel bed
when you can eat, sleep, drink and relax fishing from the comfort
of the liveaboard. Costs are much the same as staying in a hotel
and doing day trips, but also includes all your meals.

Niue: undiscovered, unspoiled,
unbelieveable
Steve has just returned from Niue,
and what a special little place Niue is – so pleasantly different
to the rest of the South Pacific islands. The overwhelming comment
I get from returning clients is “I didn’t realize
just how beautiful and clean the place is”.
Cyclone Heta that devastated much of the island in January
is now way behind them as far as tourists are concerned. Hotels,
roads and airlines are all back to normal, the lush tropical bush
is just as stunning as it always was and the aqua blue inlets are
as tranquil as ever. Niue is truly one of the places everyone should
put on their “to go there” list.
But
of course, what would a holiday be without fishing? Fishaway
Charters have taken delivery of their brand new sportfishing
boat, and local identity Willie Saniteli is fast gaining a reputation
for finding the big wahoo Niue is renowned for.
Because the fishing grounds are only 5 minutes from the boat ramp,
while your non-fishing partner is still asleep, you can be out there
bringing in the “razor gang” and be back in time for
brekkie.
Niue is highly recommended for non fishing partner holiday
and those who love snorkeling.

Kiwi anglers have long recognized the exciting opportunities offered
by the waters of their near neighbours in the South Pacific.
As the New Zealand summer season draws to a close and the billfish
and tuna depart our shores for warmer climes, so do many fishers.
For the ardent and occasional fisher alike, for seven months of
the year, our offshore waters are devoid of the pelagics we like
to pursue. So, if the fish don’t come to us, we have to go
to them! A fishing trip to the South Pacific offers a great break
from the drudgery of the New Zealand winter. All you need to take
is your fishing clothes, hat and sunnies and you are ready to take
on the challenges a wide range of sportfish have to offer, in a
variety of exciting destinations. Tonga, Vanuatu, Fiji,
The Solomon Islands and Niue are among the hotspots Kiwis
like to visit, both fish and weather wise.
Fishing in the South Pacific can be as simple or as involved as
you want to make it. And angling in these waters does not just stop
with marlin and tuna. Sailfish, wahoo and mahimahi (dolphinfish)
abound in the same waters and they can be more fun than targeting
them on your own tackle! Experience the thrill
of casting poppers and jigs to the likes of dogtooth tuna and giant
trevally. Imagine a kingfish on steroids and you have an inkling
of the pulling power of these two species, especially the “doggies”.
Now you’re hooked, how do you get there? Your first stop
should be Dive Fish Snow Travel. Our expert staff have checked out
all the destinations and can give you the genuine oil.
We have our 4 page full colour “Guide to Fishing
the South Pacific” printed in the June issue of “New
Zealand Fishing News”. It’s full of great information
and covers fishing in Tonga, Niue, Solomons, Fiji and Vanuatu.
